Munich
Airport is the second busiest facility in Germany after Frankfurt, and
ranks seventh among European airports. An airfield was constructed
before the First World War at Oberwiesenfeld, which was later the site
of the 1972 Olympic Village. A commercial airport was constructed in
1932 at Riem, and it was here that the first jet aircraft were flown.
Destroyed by bombing in 1945, Munich-Riem was rebuilt as a civilian
airport and operated until 1992.
