GETTING TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT IN KEY WEST
Many travelers to and from Key West fly into airports in other cities, such as Miami, Fort Myers and Naples. Car rental is simple in these places, and it takes 3 to 5 hours to drive, with the option of visiting other places in South Florida and the Keys on the way. Key West International Airport, the southernmost airport in the United States, is located 2 miles (3 km) east of the city, and is one of the smallest airports offering scheduled passenger jet service. It was one of the first airfields in the country, from which AgustínParla flew to Cuba without a map or compass in 1913, and was subsequently used for mail and seaplane service to Cuba and later for tourist air traffic to the island. The airport terminal was constructed in 1957 and replaced by a modern terminal in 2009. Delta Air Lines now serves Key West, along with connecting service from other Florida cities on American Eagle, Silver Airways, Cape Air and US Airways Express.
