GETTING TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT IN MUNICH
Munich Airport is the second busiest facility in Germany after Frankfurt, and ranks seventh among European airports. An airfield was constructed before the First World War at Oberwiesenfeld, which was later the site of the 1972 Olympic Village. A commercial airport was constructed in 1932 at Riem, and it was here that the first jet aircraft were flown. Destroyed by bombing in 1945, Munich-Riem was rebuilt as a civilian airport and operated until 1992.

GETTING TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT IN LBECK
The city of Lübeck in Schleswig-Holstein has its own airport, but is mainly served by the international airport in Hamburg, which is the second largest in Germany. The Lübeck airport is 8 km south of the city, and was built as a military base in 1917. It was shut down after the First World War but was reopened and expanded by the Luftwaffe after 1933. Lübeck was an important part of the British and American airlift that sustained blockaded Berlin after World War II, and an enlarged terminal for passenger air service was built in 1997. Ryanair offered low-cost flights there from 2000 to 2014 but has moved its operations to Hamburg, and the Lübeck airport is currently served only by Wizz Air flights to Gdansk, Riga, Skopje and Kiev. Motorways A1 to the north and A20 to the east serve the airport, and there is bus service every 6 minutes to central Lübeck; a shuttle bus (A20) connects to the Lübeck rail station when flights arrive. Hourly regional trains from Lübeck to Kiel and Lüneburg stop at the airport’s station.

GETTING TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT IN LEIPZIG
Leipzig has one of the longest aviation histories of any European city. Altenburg airport in Nobitz, 42 km south of the city, was an early airship base and later airfield, established by the Duke of Sachsen-Altenburg who was an enthusiastic supporter of aviation. A military air facility was established during World War I, dismantled after the war, reopened by the Luftwaffe for advanced training and subsequently maintained by the Soviet Air Force until just before the reunification of Germany. The airport was a regional civilian facility from 1992 to 2011, and is today an aviation museum.
