GETTING TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT IN KIEL

The German city of Kiel is served by a small regional public airport or Verkehrslandeplatz in the borough of Holtenau, 7 km from the city center. An airfield was first constructed in 1914 with materials from the building of the Kiel Canal, and commercial flights began in 1927. The airport became a military base in 1937 but some civilian flights continued; an air terminal was built in 1965 and rebuilt in 1987, and the facility became a civilian airport run by the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Propeller-driven and turboprop air service to West Berlin and later Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich, Copenhagen, Kaliningrad (formerly Königsberg) and Riga were operated. Expansion plans in 2000 that would have allowed jet aircraft to land were shelved as air traffic dwindled, and scheduled air service ceased in 2006. The airport is now used by Air Wing number 5 of the German Navy for rescue operations, the Kiel Air Sports Organization (Luftsportverein Kiel e.V.) and a charter airline and helicopter service, as well as for the occasional display of historical aircraft and for private aviation and aircraft repair. The Kiel airport is located on highway 503 north across the Kiel Canal, and be reached by taxi. Bus lines 91, 501 and 502 operated by Kiel Regional Transportation (VRK) serve the airport.
